| Italian Master – Alberto Antonini 2006 Rosso IGT Toscana A blend of 40% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot and 30% Syrah ‘I’m guessing there has been a little bit of whole bunch fermentation in the making of the wine due to its jubey aromas and bright cherry-like fruit. Still it has fairly firm tannins, and a full, plush texture. Still a pretty sexy introduction to Tuscan wines for those weaned on wines from the New World, particularly if you are on a budget ($20). 2006 Cerro del Masso Chianti DOCG 80% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 5% Colorino Far more savoury and brooding, and in that respect more typically Tuscan. It has a thick, pea soup-like texture that I find incredibly attractive, and again it is built on a bed of tannin and acid with fruit characters of black cherries and undergrowth. It’s a fairly complex beast and still keenly priced ($23). 2006 Chianti Superiore DOCG 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot The Superiore tag means it has had extra effort – or perhaps restraint is the right word – in the vineyard, in terms of lower yields, higher resutant alcohol, and greater dry extract (which is a way of measuring the guts of the wine.) This is bigger, richer and fruitier than the Cerro del Masso, and in many ways a more modern, internationally styled wine. The fruit is still draped around an impressive frame of sandy tannins, but it is a much more plush and silky affair.
