Astrolabe

The good ship Astrolabe evokes qualities of exploration and seeking. "Purity, and a sense of place and complexity from blending many different sites together. Astrolabe Voyage Sauvignon Blanc tells the classic Marlborough story, the best that Marlborough can be." Simon Waghorn

Astrolabe Wines was established by a group of friends in 1996, effectively to become Simon Waghorn's own label. All grapes are sourced from their own vineyard development in the heart of the spectacular Waihopai Valley and from other specially chosen local vineyards in the Marlborough region. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc constitutes 80% of

 production.

2009 Astrolabe Voyage Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ
This must be Astrolabe's best Sauvignon Blanc to date-it's a long way ahead of the 2008. A combination of fruit from the Awatre and Wairau valleys endows it with the best features of both districts, producing a powerful statement about the Marlborough style. Concentrated wine with a mix of passionfruit, mineral and tomato-leaf flavours. Impeccably balanced, with a lingering finish. Super-serious sauvignon. 2009 Astrolabe Discovery Awatre Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ
I usually rate this ahead of the regular label, which in this vintage shows greater concentration than its southerly label. A fairly classic Awatre style with strong mineral, tomato leaf and green capsicum flavours. 93 pts Gourmet Traveller Wine April/May 2010
