Teusner

2007 Qantas Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year

Teusner wines was established in 2001 as a partnership between Kym Teusner (Winemaker) and Michael page (Viticulturalist) with the help of the Riebke brothers, who's old vineyards are located in the northern Barossa around the settlements of Ebenezer, Moppa and Kalimna. Leon, Steve and Nick consisitently produce some of the best fruit in the Barossa... I guess when you've tended the vines for 5 generations you'd have a pretty good handle on your piece of dirt!

In that first vintage, Teusner and Page raised enough capital for about a quarter of the fruit from that vineyard, but this was enough for the Riebke brothers to stall their plans for these precious old vines. They were aware of a few other old blocks that fruit could be sourced from, if required, and made the first release with 165 cases of 2002 Joshua. In addition to this about 8 hogsheads of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz was put aside, destined to be released around 24 months later as Avatar. The rest is history.

 2008 The Independent (Shiraz 60% Mataro 40%)
Kym Teusner is the whizz-kid of the Barossa, crafting slick, succulent reds from old-vine shiraz, grenache and mataro. The Independent is his latest release, and is a partner to the tremendous Reibke Shiraz. It's a blend of shiraz and mataro and is seriously good stuff. In fact its hard to think of another red wine that delivers this much flavour for so few dollars. RRP $22 Tony Harper

2009 The Riebke Northern Barossa Shiraz
It has all the plush, velvety fruit characters of previous vintages, some gorgeous floral high tones, bright acidity and an opulent texture on the palate. The Bouquet is sweetly scented with lifted aromas of satsuma plum, blackberry and black cherry with some blueberry fruit lift. Hints of liquorice, asian spice, kirsch, cola, sarsparilla and some enticing violet high tones. The palate is densely packed and bursting with black and dark fruits, kirsch and plum with a touch of asian spice, liquorice, jasmine and a healthy dose of Barossa earth. The concentrated, opulent fruit finishes long, dry and savoury with chalky ripe tannins.... in fact Kym reckons that this is the best one that we've released to date!

"Teusner's wine epitomise the new wave style... ultra luscious fruit richness and black cherry polish, a world away from the overoaked ponderous Barossa reds of the past." Max Allen, Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine
